The MAC protocol often uses time division multiple access (TDMA) or carrier sense multiple access (CSMA)/collision avoidance for accessing of shared medium. MAC protocols are designed to handle emergency applications like disaster and fire. During an emergency response, the packet delivery ratio should be very high with low latency, and these packets should be treated with high importance. While designing protocols, these situations should be considered, and these packets should be treated with the more importance than any other data on the network. The Z-MAC protocol proposed for the wireless sensor network is able to dynamically adjust behavior of the MAC protocol between CSMA and TDMA, based on the level of contention within the network. A hybrid MAC protocol combines a synchronous scheme with an asynchronous scheme to achieve high throughput in the network. Funneling-MAC is a hybrid protocol for sensor networks that is capable of mitigating the funneling effect and boosting application fidelity in the sensor network.
