Quality of Service-Sensitive MAC Protocols in Wireless Sensor Networks

Ankur Dumka, Sandip Kumar Chaurasiya, Arindam Biswas, Hardwari Lal Mandoria · 2019

This chapter focuses on support of Quality of Service (QoS) in the MAC layer of wireless sensor network (WSN) architecture. It discusses distributed QoS support in the MAC layer because all other layers of a WSN architecture depend on the MAC layer, making the MAC layer a decisive factor in the overall performance of the network. The chapter presents studies of existing QoS-aware MAC protocols, including underground, underwater, and mobile sensor networks. It also discusses both types of QoS provisioning and their challenges for providing QoS within network parameters like delay, throughput, duty cycle, and contention window at the MAC layer. Two types of service differentiation model can be adapted for wired and wireless networks for providing efficient QoSL: differentiated services and Intserv. The topology of a WSN can change due to natural events like fire and flood which can lead to problems like link failure, node mobility, malfunctioning of nodes, and energy depletion.
