Building KM into a single project
Judy Payne, Eileen J Roden, Steve Simister · 2019
This chapter explains how to build knowledge management (KM) into a single project, without any support for KM from a PMO or business as usual team – and with only basic, end-of-project KM activities in project professional&s;s organisation’s project management framework. In a single project, there is no guarantee that KM activities designed to make learning and insights available to future projects will lead to improved practices. The facilitator can create the right environment and help stakeholders work through the development tasks, which has the added benefit of building relationships between stakeholders. Include knowledge-related benefits such as learning and capability building. Although all the published project management frameworks make reference to some kind of KM, none of them explicitly include KM throughout the project lifecycle or label all the knowledge-related activities and thinking as ‘KM’. The working environment and KM activities are always planned in advance. KM activities are built into the iterative practices chosen.
