"Smarter" Roads and Highways

The Internet of Things can be used in conjunction with roads and highways to increase safety, reduce congestion and overall costs of maintenance, improve traffic flow, and provide a more pleasant experience for drivers and passengers. At the same time, there are inherent problems related to these systems such as the need to ensure safety and privacy when unexpected systems interactions occur. In this work we provide some guidance and a vision going forward for device manufactures, planners, highway construction companies, and other stakeholders.
