Performance Anomalies of Smartphone-based Mobile Wi-Fi Hotspots
M.F. Osama Abu-Sharkh · 2019
In this work, we tackle the ubiquitous provision of internet connections for users in smart cities by analyzing the mobile Wi-Fi hotspots and their performance from several aspects. We first discuss the capabilities and operational characteristics of these networks and the limitations they have when compared with other similar IEEE 802.11 modes. We then conduct experiments to analyze their performance considering the following: operational frequency band, channel bandwidth, maximum number of connected devices, received signal strength, coverage and connection speed. The obtained results show many performance anomalies for such networks.
