High precision clock synchronization according to IEEE 1588 : implementation and performance issues
Hans Weibel · 2005
A high precision time base is important for distributed systems in measurement and automa-tion applications. The Precision Time Protocol (PTP) specified in IEEE 1588 [1] is able to synchronize distributed clocks with an accuracy of less than one microsecond. It is applicable in multicast capable network technologies such as Ethernet LANs. The mechanism combines high accuracy and fast convergence with low demand on clocks and on network and comput-ing capacity. The paper outlines the application areas of precise time synchronization. The operation of the mechanism as specified in IEEE 1588 is explained and the factors contributing to preci-sion are analyzed. A real and portable implementation is presented. Its performance is evaluated with respect to synchronization behaviour, accuracy and stability under real condi-tions.
