Application of the 2nd-ASAM to a Linear Heat Conduction and Convection Benchmark Problem

Dan Gabriel Cacuci · 2018

This chapter presents an application of the Second-Order Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis Methodology (2nd-ASAM) to a benchmark problem that models the steady-state heat conduction within a heated cylindrical rod cooled by forced convection to a surrounding liquid flowing along the rod&s;s length. It describes the heat transport benchmark problem, which comprises six thermal-hydraulics parameters and admits an easily tractable closed-form analytical solution. The chapter shows that the construction and solution of the second-Level Adjoint Sensitivity System (2nd-LASS) require very little additional effort beyond the construction of the 1st-LASS needed for computing the first-order sensitivities. It provides the exact and FLUENT-computed coolant temperature distributions along the coolant&s;s flow direction. The chapter also provides a benchmark problem for verifying the capabilities and accuracy of the FLUENT Adjoint Solver.
