Mobility and Multicast: Protocol Design and Analysis

With the emergence of a wide variety of mobile devices, providing an efficient multicast service in a mobile environment became important. Traditional solutions based on remote subscription are not efficient for highly mobile nodes, as the multicast tree must be frequently reconstructed. On the other hand, solutions based on bidirectional tunneling introduce triangular routing. Performance losses due to triangular routing are highly dependent on network topology. In this paper we analyze these losses for different theoretical models, such as k-ary and self-similar trees. Then we compare them with simulation results obtained on realistic, Internet-like topologies.
