The use of touch screens in mobile phones has made it difficult for elderly people to use these devices. Elderly people find it difficult to type text on mobile phones. But it will be more convenient if they can physically draw the gesture corresponding to that alphabet in air. Drawing such gestures in air is a recently emerging field in recent times. In this system, a combination of computer vision and convolution neural networks is used for detecting drawn gesture and recognizing it. Few of the methods employed, use colored fingertip for tracking the motion of the finger as proposed in [1]. But it is not feasible always to use colored finger. Our proposed application supports drawing of gestures and writing of English text over air in front of the mobile camera by using bare fingertip. Convolution neural networks has been used for character recognition. The method presented will be applicable to other fields requiring hand gesture recognition for distant interaction with mobiles and computers. Our proposed System does not require sensors or any hardware other than the camera.
