Optical attenuation without absorption

When dealing with statistics, postselection and heralding are known to produce counterintuitive results. By monitoring the state of an ensemble of two-level atoms and considering only the events where the atoms did not get excited, it is theoretically shown that one could induce abnormally large attenuation, whereas the opposite would be expected.
