IDTable: Self-Describing Relational Data for Resource-Constraint Smart Objects

Wuming Luo · 2018

Smart Objects are core components of Internet of Things and they should have the capability of self-description data representation in order to improve interoperability, scalability, and efficiency. For common relational data in smart object, popular XML, JSON, EDI and YAML are too heavy to be used for self-description of relational data in smart object, and conventional Application Identifier (APID)method cannot represent the relationship of table fields and records and it is inefficient. This paper presents a self-description IDTable for relational data in resource-restraint smart objects. The representation of relational data is divided into two parts, one is to define table header fields and the other is to construct the table records according to the above table header. The IDTable-V is designed for variable-length fields table and the IDTable-F is for fixed-length fields table. We analyze the performance of our data representation structure and evaluate its performance in different settings. The evaluation results demonstrate that the IDTable is flexible and efficient.
