Using ontologies for intelligent information retrieval in an e-commerce application case study

One of the biggest challenges which developers face in building advanced applications for the internet is related to the process of information retrieval from Web pages. This paper concerns to a project that has the aim to development a system based on Multi Agent technology to be used in the e-Commerce Purchasing process, through generating a catalogue that normalises data products from multiple vendors providing comparability. The issue of identifying products in a large amount of suppliers Web pages is a problem that can be overcome using Ontologies. This paper aims to explore, through a case study, the following points: how an e-Commerce purchasing system can overcome the barriers of Information Retrieval using Ontologies, and what are the end results and planned improvements that will allow more elaborate Web searches by purchasers.
