The complexity of today's software makes the debugging process much more difficult and costly.Techniques that might automatically locate a fault have not reached the level of accuracy or consistency that one might wish.To be overcome are several difficulties: how do you distinguish executions when there are multiple faults that may be causes? How do you reliably record/replay failed executions? And how can you be certain the fixes will not introduce even more faults? Many of the current approaches have serious shortcomings, which makes them less applicable. These include the lack of scalability of formal verification, static analysis that is imprecise, and finally, the high cost of dynamic techniques. These are problems that can be resolved, and research is underway to do just that, but the approaches often involve subject programs that come up short when compared to software on an industrial scale.
