Emotional expressions are vital in everyday interactions. However, how people use bodily motions to express emotions still needs to be fully explored. On the other hand, interactions which people engage with digital devices are rapidly increasing. Human to human interactions are also increasingly mediated by digital devices. This research will explore how movements of different form elements of a physical device can express emotions in a way similar to how human body movements express emotion. This research aims to develop a framework followed by a range of expressive physical movement designs. This framework can be used to analyze human’s expressive body motions, thereby to assist in developing expressive physical movements in designed artefacts. Research outcomes will have various applications in everyday human computer interactions such as adding an emotional dimension to robotics, artificial intelligence, computer mediated communication, and remote communication (health, business-to-business, education) among others.
