Response to ‘‘Comments on ‘Patterns of expressive timing in performances of a Beethoven minuet by nineteen famous pianists’ ’’ [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 96, 1174–1178 (1994)]
Bruno H. Repp · The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America · 1994
Clynes [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 96, 1174–1178 (1994)] argues that Repp’s [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 88, 622–649 (1990)] search for the ‘‘Beethoven pulse’’ in famous pianists’ performances of a Beethoven minuet was more successful than his conclusions suggested. This reply presents reasons for why the earlier results, despite Clynes’s arguments and additional analyses, provide inconclusive (though by no means negative) evidence for the Beethoven pulse in great pianists’ performances.
