Paper tape

Jiří Nečas · Encyclopedia of Computer Science · 2003

Punched paper tape is a storage medium used for the preparation, storage, and transmission of data in various applications. Slow-speed paper tape may be used as a control device for numerically controlled machine tool operations. At higher speeds, paper tape was once used for typesetting, telegraphic and data transmission, automated typewriting, for storing computer programs and data, and also for other data processing functions (e.g. to control the carriage movement in line printers), but few if any such applications are in current use.
