This research is intended to narrow the gap between two fields, namely communication and control. This goal is accomplished by bringing solutions from control theory and applying them to communication problems. In wireless communications, it is essential to find effective means of power control of signals received from randomly dispersed users within one cell. In particular, power control is very important for the success of code division multiple access (CDMA) systems. In this research, power control systems with their essential components, are analyzed and designed. Modern control concepts are used to model the users in a wireless network, and with the help of linear quadratic control, the power control command is obtained. Estimation algorithm of the signal quality, and a prediction approach to combat the inherent time-delay in the system are also designed. An important component in the power control algorithm is the admission control policy. Due to the limited resources in many situations, not all the users trying to access the wireless network may be granted permission. The admission policy has a direct impact on the system capacity, and hence, is very crucial. In this work, soft computing techniques are used to aid in the design of such policy.
