A Study of the Build-Versus-Buy Decision in Developing Embedded Systems

Kim R. Fowler, Sanjoy Das, Stephen A. Dyer · IEEE Systems Journal · 2019

We studied parameters in making the build-versus-buy decision when developing embedded systems. Team expertise and available resources are most important, while partitioning tasks and reducing interdependence are next in importance. The quality and support of commercial units are less important while premiums and product lifecycles have the least affect on the cost of development.
