106. Human Scale Web Collecting for Individuals and Institutions (Webrecorder Workshop).

Anna L. Perricci · OSF Preprints (OSF Preprints) · 2018

Webrecorder is a prime example of the innovation and value that can be produced when art and science meet to tackle big problems such as those inherent to web archiving. ‘Web archiving for all!’ has been our motto and goal as we work to make web collecting a more inclusive practice by providing powerful tools that can be used by digital preservation practitioners and non-expert users alike. Webrecorder is a project of Rhizome, an organization that supports the creation and preservation of born-digital art and culture online, and is rapidly growing with generous grant funding. Through this workshop participants will gain a working knowledge of how to capture, maintain and share web archives via Webrecorder.io and use Webrecorder Player, a desktop application for accessing WARC files, to interact with web archives offline. Attendees will benefit from this workshop by gaining the ability to create high fidelity captures to make collections that can be managed and shared within Webrecorder.io or downloaded and added to larger collections including those created using web crawlers. This workshop on Webrecorder’s suite of tools and features will provide an important perspective on an emerging approach web collecting at a human scale (one page at a time). In this session we will also pursue a better understanding of components of the practice of web archiving and explore how they can fit into existing and emerging digital preservation workflows.
