Definitions and Notation
Pablo Pavón Mariño · 2016
This chapter introduces the notation that will be consistently used in the book for mathematical artifacts like sets, vectors, norms, and matrices of functions. Then, basic definitions are covered for the main concepts appearing in network design: network topology of links and nodes, path and multicast trees, traffic demands for unicast, anycast and multicast traffic, traffic matrix representation of the demands, elastic and inelastic traffic sources in a network, and the routing of the unicast/anycast/multicast traffic demands across the network links. We adopt an abstract representation of the network that accommodates these concepts without relying in any particular network technology.
