Heinz Nixdorf (1925-1986) (see Fig. 1), came to stand for successful, innovative entrepreneurship in the German computing industry. Under his leadership the company that he had founded in 1952, Nixdorf Computer AG, became the second biggest information technology company in Germany--second only to Siemens. He enjoyed such prestige as an entrepreneur and manager in the 1980s that Fortune voted him the most capable manager in Europe.
