Virtual Director

This chapter provides an insight into various aspects of Virtual Director technology. The first section introduces the concept of a Virtual Director and puts existing implementations in literature into perspective. Then, potential technical approaches are discussed and the combination of event processing and rule engines is inspected. Next, a generic architecture and information workflow for Virtual Director software systems is described. Selected subprocesses of a software framework executing Virtual Director behaviour are also highlighted. The chapter then explains the process of designing a Virtual Director's behaviour and takes a closer look at selected issues, focusing on visual output, and presents selected issues in production grammar implementation. Finally, the chapter presents a concrete existing implementation of a Virtual Director research prototype for a format-agnostic production system.
