Applying the MQTT Protocol on Embedded System for Smart Sensors/Actuators and IoT Applications

Santi Nuratch · 2018

This research presents implementation guidelines and techniques for applying the MQTT protocol on an embedded system to construct smart sensors/actuators and many IoT applications. The proposed system is based on a small and low-cost microcontroller. A firmware of the microcontroller is designed and implemented based on a custom operating system using the special technique. The powerful implementation technique is called the Asynchronous Event-Driven Non-Blocking I/O. All peripheral drivers used in the proposed system are implemented based on event-driven queue and callback functions. With this implementation approach, we can achieve the very high efficiency of the microcontroller. The proposed system can connect to the internet network using WiFi module of Ethernet Controller. It is fully evaluated in real-world environments and tested in many possible conditions. The experimental results show that the proposed system can work correctly as expected in all situations.
