Basics of Image Processing

Maheshkumar H. Kolekar · 2018

This chapter provides an overview of the existing techniques in digital image processing (DIP) to the reader. It introduces the DIP, the DIP system, important components of DIP, commonly used methods for DIP, image segmentation, and some applications of DIP. DIP uses computer algorithms to perform some operations on an image to extract some useful information from it. In DIP, input is an image and output is a processed image. An image is processed by using some mathematical operations or signal processing techniques, or a computer algorithm, to generate the modified output image or parameters related to an image. DIP is preferred because it has many advantages over analog image processing. DIP avoids problems such as noise and signal distortion. It allows the use of matrix operations to be applied to the input image. Hence, DIP offers better performance and better implementation methods that would not be possible with analog processing.
