Combinational Circuits
Ed Lipiansky · 2012
Digital design is concerned with the design of digital electronic circuits. Two main classes of digital circuits cover the world of digital design: combinational circuits and sequential circuit. This chapter first considers three-bit binary numbers. It particularly focuses on positive or unsigned binary numbers. Then, the chapter talks about Boolean algebra that consists of binary variables and the logical operations among them. Some other basics postulates and theorems used in Boolean algebra are presented. The chapter focuses on the standard or canonical sum of products (SOP) form and also on the standard or canonical product of sums (POS) form. It further talks about Karnaugh maps and logic gates. Logic gates are available in integrated circuit packages or as macros or combinational logic building blocks in Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs), Complex Programmable Logic Devices (CPLDs), Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), and other devices. Controlled Vocabulary Terms Boolean algebra; combinational circuits; digital circuits; Digital integrated circuits; Field programmable gate arrays; logic gates
