Application Layer

The role of the application layer is to abstract the physical topology of the wireless sensor network (WSN) for the applications. Moreover, the application layer provides necessary interfaces to the user to interact with the physical world through the WSN. This chapter describes the application layer solutions in three categories: source coding (data compression), query processing, and network management. It discusses two major approaches for compression in WSNs: node-centric source coding technique, Sensor LZW; and distributed source coding. Energy-efficient representation and dissemination of queries as well as the collection of interested data are of major concern in the design of query processing algorithms. The chapter also describes the query representation approaches and aggregation issues in WSNs in general. Two representative network management solutions: Management Architecture for Wireless Sensor Networks (MANNA) and Sensor Network Management System (SNMS) are discussed.
