Virtual Genius
David Cope · 2014
This chapter examines the possibilities of computational genius. The author begins by defining the term “genius,” and then describing several categories of human examples. These examples include individual genius – Helen Keller, universal genius – a chess master, abstract genius – Euler's theorem, group genius – collective intelligence, and imitative genius – Bach fugues. Following this, the author presents several possible ways in which computers may develop virtual genius, represented here in both music and visual art. Several examples are given of both human and computational genius in both figures and sound.
