At the beginning of the 1980s, there were fewer than 20 commercial statistical software packages. At the end of the 1990s, there were over 1,000 packages, and the annual revenue to the producers of those packages surpasses a billion dollars. This explosion in the availability of softfware to perform statistical calculations has caused a corresponding increase in both the available methodology and in the diversity of applications.
