James W. Cortada, Martin Campbell‐Kelly, Richard Coopey, Marie Anchordoguy · Encyclopedia of Computer Science · 2003

The US computer industry began in the early 1950s when the first commercial computers were made. This industry comprised manufacturers of computers, manufacturers of peripheral equipment for those systems, producers of software, and purveyors of a variety of support services. The earliest computer products available for commercial applications emerged in the USA and the UK. By the end of the 1950s, these machines were being sold all over Europe, Latin America, and in East Asia, most notably in Japan.
