Surveillance Systems and Applications

Maheshkumar H. Kolekar · 2018

This chapter begins with a short introduction to surveillance systems. It presents the video content analytics (VCA). The chapter discusses some application case studies, such as baggage exchange detection and fence crossing detections. It also discusses military applications. The chapter presents more details on the use of surveillance systems in transportation. Video surveillance is of increasing importance as most organizations seek to safeguard physical and capital assets. Video surveillance technology has been used to control traffic, detect accidents on highways, and monitor crowd behavior in public spaces. VCA is a new technology that has wide applications. In many applications, VCA is implemented on Closed-circuit television systems, either distributed on the cameras or centralized on dedicated processing systems. VCA is the capability to automatically analyze video to detect abnormal activities. Many different functionality can be implemented in VCA, such as video motion detection.
