Quasi-Static Averaging of Microscopic Fields and the Concept of Bianisotropy
Constantin R. Simovski · 2018
The idea of multipole hierarchy had been already developed in precedent works of the scientific team guided by R. Raab. Namely, in works the hierarchic multipole expansion was analyzed for molecular media. However, the homogenization model was not built in these works. In these studies the microscopic response of a molecule to the local field was for simplicity identified with the macroscopic response of the effective medium to the mean field. Only crystal media are truly regular arrays of atoms/molecules. Liquids are slightly irregular lattices of molecules. They can be approximated as regular lattices only in the vicinity of the observation point—on the scale much larger than one unit cell but smaller than the wavelengths of the visible light. Bianisotropic media are media in which the mean electric field induces the magnetic polarization, and vice versa, the mean magnetic field induces the electric polarization.
