Case Study: Interplanetary Networks
Aloizio P. Silva, Scott C. Burleigh · 2018
This chapter describes "InterPlanetary Internet or Interplanetary Network (IPN)" architecture, which is one way of configuring and using DTN. It discusses one implementation of DTN named Interplanetary Overlay Network (ION) which provides the main functions to allow networked communications in deep space. The chapter also discusses the principal components of ION and their configurations. The architecture itself was defined in terms of several types of communication subnetworks, called architectural elements. The chapter presents high level architecture of the Solar System Internetwork (SSI) architecture, for comparison with the previously presented architectures. The SSI architecture has been described in detail in the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems Space Internetworking Services-Delay-Tolerant Networking (SIS-DTN) working group. The simple communication model represents a mission and its space communication services, managed by a single space agency. The mission is responsible for the provisioning and utilization of the space link.
