The Leibniz Ribbon: An Algorithmic Perspectivism of News Feed
Dmitry F. Testov · Polylogos · 2018
The article is an attempt of philosophical analysis of the effects of Facebook's news feed algorithms working. From G. Lovink's and E. Parizer's thesis, the author resorts to Leibniz's ontological model. In applying the latter, the user's position can be captured by the concept of "shared perspectivism".It's argued that a news feed algorithm contradicts the idea of network communication, because algorithmic mediation of interaction between isolated "Monads" of filter bubbles represents "Predefined harmony" rather than true communication. The central thesis is that besides filter bubbles and echo-chambers, personalization algorithms produce an increased relevance effect in the perception of the streaming of events. It's emphasized this increased relevance may be regarded as an approximate synonym of "ideology".
