The Measurement of Explanatory Style

This Chapter chronicles the current State of the measurement of explanatory style. The three most commonly used methods for assessing explanatory style are described and critiqued. They are the Attributional Style Questionnaire (ASQ; Peterson, Semmel, von Baeyer, Abramson, Metalsky, & Seligman, 1982; Selig­ man, Abramson, Semmel, & von Baeyer, 1979), the Content Analysis of Verbatim Explanations technique (CAVE; Peterson, Luborsky, & Seligman, 1983), and the Children’s Attributional Style Questionnaire (CASQ; Kaslow, Tannenbaum, & Seligman, 1978).
