Coprime arrays are used in direction of arrival (DOA) estimation systems due to their increased degrees of freedom (DOF). This work studies the effect of using real antennas within coprime arrays for DOA estimation in small form factor mobile handheld devices at 5.7 GHz. A printed microstrip patch coprime array made of two uniform arrays of 2 and 3 elements with a fundamental interelement spacing of 0.5A was fabricated using 125 mm × 60 mm × 1.5 mm FR-4 substrate. The simulated radiation pattern was incorporated in a DOA estimation algorithm based on Compressive Sensing (CS). Monte Carlo simulations showed increased error due to the introduction of real antenna radiation patterns compared with ideal isotropic antennas.
