This paper presents UPES, a data replication protocol that captures the underlying abstractions for replication and can therefore serve as a common substrate for building and deploying new replication systems. In particular, by supporting partial replication, flexible consistency, and topology independence, systems that cover a large portion of the design space can be constructed on UPES. Second, by providing incremental log exchange and checkpoint exchange, UPES effectively supports efficient synchronization even in adverse network conditions. Third, by implementing update subscriptions and conflict detection efficiently, the costs associated with building a system on UPES is proportional to the demands of the system. We present the details of UPES, demonstrate its flexibility for building a wide variety of systems and quantify its communication and storage overheads. 1
