Frequency Estimation for Burst Communication Based on Irregular Repetition of Data Symbols

This paper proposes two carrier frequency offset estimation methods based on irregular repetition of data symbols in a transmission burst. These methods, Symbol Repetition based R&B Estimation (SR-RBE) and Symbol Repetition based Iterative Estimation (SR-IE), are especially well-suited for systems operating at very low SNR levels and having a limited burst duration, a typical setting for military waveforms. Even under random like repetition patterns, proposed methods exploit the symbol repetition and provide a solid estimation accuracy performance in a regime where classical blind frequency estimators without any knowledge of data repetition suffer from threshold effect. Both methods require no additional pilot overhead and can be used with any type of memoryless modulation in data.
