Multiplexers, Demultiplexers, ROMs, and PLDs

Multiplexing is the technique of putting multiple signals on the same data path, and demultiplexing is the technique of sorting or decoding the signals back to multiple data paths. This is convenient when interfacing between different parts of a circuit. It acts as the electrical analog of a rotary switch which sends a single input signal to one of the 2n outputs, depending upon the value of the n-bit select inputs which control the DMUX. A PROM requires one address line for each input variable, and each added variable doubles the number of minterms generated by the PROM.
