Many real-world wireless networks for industrial internet of things applications have diverse connectivity characteristics, which makes routing protocol design challenging. Although adaptive routing protocols have been emerging to deal with connectivity diversity, there is still lack of a unified routing framework in well-connected and intermittently connected networks. In this paper, we present a unified routing metric for wireless networks with diverse connectivity, and formulate the adaptive routing problem as an integer linear programming optimization one. We then propose a heuristic routing protocol, caching-optimized adaptive routing protocol (COARP). Extensive simulation results show that COARP is near optimal in simple static network scenarios, and performs well across all the range of connectivity spectrum in dynamic network scenarios.
