Chirp Spread Spectrum Performance in Low Probability of Intercept Theater

Bijan G. Mobasseri, Khanh Dai Pham · 2018

The Low Probability of Intercept (LPI) theater is a contest between an intended receiver and an intercept receiver. Both receivers need energy for detection. The challenge is to push the signal power below that of the intercept receiver noise floor while keeping it still detectable at the intended receivers. Signals with a large time-bandwidth product can trade bandwidth for signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio. This property can be exploited by matched processing. In this work, we propose an LPI signal based on Chirp Spread Spectrum (CSS). The performance of the intercept receiver and the intended receiver are captured by their respective Receiver Operating Characteristics(ROC) curves. It is shown that it is possible to design CSS waveforms at such low power that places the intercept receiver on its “chance line” while maintaining detectability at the intended receiver.
