Copyright and data protection
Elaine Ansell · 2018
The law in both copyright and data protection areas has been revised considerably since the publication of the last UK complete act on copyright: the Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988. This chapter covers the Act, its updates and amendments; the Patent Office and copyright agencies in the UK; licensing and the Copyright Licensing Agency; international copyright agreements; the work of the World Intellectual Property Organization and the tremendous impact made by the electronic publication and distribution of intellectual property material particularly via the Internet. Libraries and individuals are allowed to copy material under the &s;fair dealing&s; clause without seeking the permission of the copyright owner. Creative Commons is an organization, established in the United States in 2001, which aims to provide a middle way between total copyright control and the uncontrolled exploitation of intellectual property.
