KWUN 1. Introduction.We give a set-theoretic characterization of the topological «-sphere.In so doing, we use some notions introduced by R. L. Wilder in his summer lectures of 1948 at the University of Michigan.Also an essential use is made' of modified forms of some results [l] of R. H. Bing.2. Characterization theorem.We first define terms cells, complexes and their simple subdivisions.They are originally due to R. L. Wilder and we use slightly modified forms here.
