Seismic attributes, such as seismic-impedance, AVO or AVA attributes, or other amplitude-like attributes and so on, increase the ability of interpreting the geological information of seismic data. However, in practical case, the calculation of seismic attributes is based on mathematic relationship, such as derviative or integration of seismic data. So, it will also enhance noise. Historically proposed edge-preserving smoothing (EPS) method can suppress noise along reflectors while preserving major stratigraphic or structural discontinuities which are very important for geological interpretaion. However, there is a limitation of fixed window size. That is to say, the genuine geological features (e.g., channels, minor fault or thin layers) will be suppressed if their width are smaller than size of filter window. On the other hand, if the window size is too small, noise will not be sufficiently removed. In order to overcome thelimitation, this paper presents a new edge-preserving smoothing method. It use a series of adaptive adjusted filter window through filter window size scanning. This method can strike a balance between removing noise and protecting useful geological information. Applications on the 1-D model have shown the effectivity of the proposed method.
