Automotive Cyber Security

Flavio D. Garcia · 2018

The automotive industry is undergoing a major transformation process where everything from the car key to the vehicle diagnostics is becoming digital. Modern vehicles have several wireless interfaces, and are interconnected with various consumer devices, infrastructure and the Internet. This connectivity adds great functionality and has the potential to transform our transportation, but it also introduces a number of security and privacy threats. Safety critical functionality of the vehicle is controlled by a multitude of Electronic Control Units (ECUs) which are fully programmable. As vehicles become more programmable and interconnected, they also become more vulnerable to cyber attacks. Current state of the art in automotive security is rudimentary, comparable to computers in the early days of the Internet. At the same time, Tesla has rolled out their autopilot feature and Uber is testing a fleet of (semi) autonomous cars.
