Power systems dynamics are evolving very quickly due to a continuously rising number of power electronic devices connected to the grid. In this context, ensuring power system stability emerges as a real challenge for Transmission System Operators (TSOs). In addition to that, the growing number of High-Voltage Direct-Current (HVDC) interconnections forces the TSOs to consider the interconnected neighboring countries in the scope of their simulations. In order to do so, TSOs need to be able to exchange dynamic models and to have access to an open and flexible power systems time-domain simulation tool. Most of the currently available tools have been designed as black boxes tailored for classical AC systems. In this paper, RTE proposes a new and flexible time-domain simulation tool that will soon be released open-source. This tool is based on two main principles: the use of the Modelica equation-based modeling language for the modeling part, and a clear separation between the modeling and the solving parts. This approach will set a framework for fruitful collaborations between all the Power System stakeholders, from universities to Transmission System Operators.
