Forensic stylistics Theory and practice of forensic stylistics

The purpose of this chapter is to outline the theory and practice of forensic stylistics as a technique that utilizes the linguistic analysis of writing style for the purpose of authorship identification. For a longer, more detailed treatment of the same subject matter, I refer the reader to McMenamin (2002). As in most of my previous work on forensic stylistics, I write for readers of varying backgrounds, so linguists may simply want to skip over sections whose purpose they recognize to be foundational.
