The accurate method for estimating location and orientation of a passive space vehicle by analysis of optical flow and computer calculations onboard a space free-flying robot is presented. The optical flow calculation in-turn is based upon analysis of the space vehicle dynamic video frames with non-uniform brightness variations. The proposed algorithm is based on a generalized dynamic image model in conjunction with regularization of framework to cope with analysis of non-uniform brightness variations. To alleviate flow constraint errors due to image aliasing and noise, we employ an original method to suppress the errors, thus results to robust processing of optical flow.
