Image enhancement is one the most important areas of image processing. It involves operations such as contrast enhancement, reducing the noise so as to increase the quality of the image etc. In this paper we propose to introduce intrinsic image decomposition using optimization. Our method is based on the assumption that neighbouring pixels of an image with similar illumination values will have similar reflectance values. Thus intrinsic image decomposition is done by optimizing an energy function with adding a weight constraint to image properties. Then we adjust the illumination layer to enhance the illumination layer. The final enhanced image is obtained by compensating the adjusted illumination layer back to the reflectance layer and passing it through a CLAHE. Experiment results demonstrate that the proposed method provides better or comparable quality compared with other state-of-the-art image enhancement methods.
