The Mobile Radio Propagation Model “OKUMURA-Curve” and the World's First Full-Scale Cellular Telephone System
Yukihiko Okumura · 2017
This paper describes the pioneering achievements related to the establishment of the basic mobile radio propagation model and the actualization of the world's first full-scale cellular telephone system that adopted this model. These achievements were supported and advanced by the Electrical Communication Laboratory (ECL) of the Nippon Telegraph Telephone (NTT) Public Corporation of Japan from 1962 to 1979 under the direction of Dr. Yoshihisa Okumura and his successor, Mr. Sadao Ito. On February 19, 2013, Dr. Okumura was awarded the “2013 Charles Stark Draper Prize” by the US National Academy of Engineering for his pioneering contributions to the world's first cellular telephone networks, systems, and standards.
