Lexical simplification is the task of replacing a complex term with its simpler alternatives. We propose a system to identify complex scientific terms in a sentence and replace them with simpler substitutes. The proposed system has 4 stages, namely Complex word identification, Substitution generation, Substitution selection and Substitution ranking. For complex word identification, we use Conditional Random Field (CRF) based model. To obtain correct substitute for the complex term, we apply several filtering methods on the simplification rules. Results show that the CRF based approach for complex word identification gives better accuracy and our substitution generation method out performs previous approaches.
